Topic – Identify a topic that is relevant to the nursing profession for which a literature review would be helpful in ascertaining current knowledge on the topic, with the goal of evidence-based practice. Be specific in selecting a topic in order to retrieve the most appropriate and relevant research reports to the topic selected.

Introduction

Discuss first a background of the topic in the introduction.
Discuss the rationale regarding why a review of the literature search is needed. Describe the significance of the problem to nursing practice. Be sure to include statistics as well as statements regarding significance of the problem.
Describe method of how the literature search was conducted o Electronic databases used, use of reference lists etc. o Keywords used o Describe how the search was narrowed o Discuss why the particular reports selected were chosen o Discuss if there was a lot of literature or a dearth on the topic
Write an evidence-based question that your literature search will answer. The introduction section should conclude with the statements stating the evidencebased question and referral to the table. Example: The evidence-based question for the literature search was “How does exercise affect fatigue in clients with cancer?” Table I summarizes the studies included in this literature review.

Review of Literature

Literature review will include five research reports applicable to the selected topic discussed in a logical, organized format such as first discuss all systematic reviews, then quantitative studies, then qualitative studies and list within each group in order by year. If all studies are one type of study, for example they are all quantitative studies, then discuss in chronological order.
The reports reviewed should demonstrate the most current evidence on the topic selected. Reports must be published within five years, if not, then must discuss with research mentor to obtain for permission to use an older report.

Primary rather than secondary sources are to be used. One report may be a metaanalysis or a systematic review.
At least four out of the five research reports selected must be studies that were conducted in the United States. Only one research report can be either from Canada, Australia, or a European country, but all five can be from the United States.
Pertinent information regarding reports used is briefly given, including identifying if the study is a quantitative study, a qualitative study, or a review and type of review, design, level of evidence (I-VII, see p. 15 in textbook), description of population, sample, methodology and/or other information which have implications for evidence-based practice.
Reports and Findings must be compared throughout the paper.
Be sure to break into a new paragraph when discussing a different topic or concept. If you have one paragraph discussing one report or one paragraph for the entire introduction, then most likely you need to break it up into paragraphs.
